Family Literacy

The Family, Friends & Neighbors (FFN) Training & Mentoring Project for Child Care Providers 

This program targets individuals who care for one or more children in their home (other than their own), for at least 15 hours/week. The goals of the program are to:  enhance the child care and child development skills and knowledge of those providing the in-home care; enhance social connectedness among such providers; and enhance the providers’ knowledge and utilization of available community resources. By assisting local child care providers with the training and support they need, in order to provide the best possible care to the children in their charge, the providers not only benefit, but ultimately the children and the community benefit.

One of the only programs of its type in a community full of in-home child care providers, the FFN Program was not only much needed, but has become quite popular. Several community organizations help to make this program a success, including: North Valley Occupational Center (provides a teacher for the trainings), Family Literacy Support Network, Division for School Improvement, LA County Office of Education (program evaluation), and Friends of the Family (provide 10 literacy/language sessions to the providers).
